Ipomoea aquatica, called water spinach or kangkung, is a semi-aquatic tropical plant raised for its tender shoots. It is thought to have been first domesticated in Southeast Asia and is now widely grown across Southeast, East, and South Asia.

The plant thrives in water or damp soil, with hollow stems that make it buoyant. Stems can reach 2–3 meters or more, rooting at the nodes. Leaves range from arrowhead-shaped to lanceolate, 5–15 cm long and 2–8 cm wide. Its trumpet-shaped flowers are 3–5 cm across, usually white with a mauve center.
