Fucus is a genus of brown algae that lives attached to rocks in the intertidal zone of rocky coastlines around the world. Its body, or thallus, is perennial and can reach up to two meters in length. It holds onto the rock with an irregular or disc-shaped holdfast, or with root-like haptera. The upright part of the thallus branches in a forking or sub-pinnate pattern, is flattened, and has a distinct central rib. In some species, gas-filled bladders called pneumatocysts appear in pairs, one on each side of the midrib. The thallus also bears sterile surface cavities known as cryptostomata and caecostomata. Near the base, the thallus becomes stalk-like because the tissue beside the midrib wears away. Reproductive structures, called gametangia, develop inside conceptacles embedded in receptacles at the tips of the final branches. These algae can be either monoecious or dioecious.

The life cycle is simple: after meiosis, female organs (oogonia) produce egg cells and male organs (antheridia) produce sperm, which are released into the sea. Fertilization happens in the water, and the resulting zygote grows directly into a new diploid plant. This differs from flowering plants, where a haploid generation produces eggs and sperm, and fertilization occurs inside the parent plant before seeds are released.

Fucus species are found almost worldwide, both attached and free-floating. They dominate shorelines in the British Isles, the northeastern coast of North America, and California. In the British Isles, these large brown algae form distinct zones on sheltered shores from the high-water mark down to below low water. On exposed shores, fewer species appear, and on very exposed shores, few or none occur. *Pelvetia canaliculata* occupies the highest zone, followed by clear bands of *Fucus spiralis*, *Fucus vesiculosus*, *Fucus serratus*, and *Laminaria* descending to low water. On sheltered shores, *Ascophyllum nodosum* often forms a broad, dominant mid-littoral zone. Other brown algae, such as *Himanthalia*, *Laminaria saxatilis*, and *Alaria esculenta*, live in the low-littoral. Small green and red algae and animals find shelter under these large brown algae. When washed ashore, kelp flies like *Coelopa pilipes* feed and breed on *Fucus*.
