Chaos (genus)

A genus of giant multinucleate amoebae in the family Amoebidae.

Chaos is a genus of single-celled amoeboid organisms belonging to the family Amoebidae. Its most famous species, the giant amoeba (Chaos carolinense), can grow up to 5 mm long, though most individuals are between 1 and 3 mm. These organisms look a lot like those in the genus Amoeba and have a similar body plan, with many cylindrical pseudopods that end in rounded tips. The key difference is that Amoeba species have just one nucleus, while Chaos cells can contain up to a thousand.

Chaos species are versatile heterotrophs, feeding on bacteria, algae, other protists, and even small multicellular invertebrates. Like all Amoebozoa, they capture food through phagocytosis: they surround food particles with their pseudopods, then trap them inside a food vacuole where enzymes break them down. The cell has no mouth or cytostome, and there is no fixed spot on the cell membrane where phagocytosis usually happens.

The cell’s membrane, or plasmalemma, is extremely flexible, letting the organism change shape constantly. The cytoplasm inside is typically described as having two parts: the internal fluid endoplasm, which holds loose granules, food vacuoles, and organelles like nuclei and mitochondria, and a thicker, clearer ectoplasm around the cell’s edge that lacks visible granules. Like other lobose amoebae, Chaos moves by extending pseudopods. As a new pseudopod pushes out, a shifting zone of ectoplasm forms at the front, and a fountaining stream of endoplasm circulates inside. Describing these movements and explaining how they drive the cell forward has produced a large body of scientific work.

The genus Chaos has a long and confusing history. In 1755, Rösel von Rosenhof saw and drew an amoeboid he called "der kleine Proteus." Three years later, Linnaeus gave it the name Volvox chaos, but since Volvox was already used for a genus of flagellate algae, he later changed it to Chaos chaos. Over the following decades, new names and species piled up, and accounts of Chaos—under many synonyms—became so tangled with descriptions of similar organisms that it is nearly impossible to tell one historic amoeboid from another. In 1879, Joseph Leidy suggested lumping all the common large freshwater amoebae into one species, Amoeba proteus, treating a dozen species, including several once placed in Chaos, as synonyms. The genus Chaos has had a long and often confusing history. In 1755, Rösel von Rosenhof saw and depicted an amoeboid he named 'der kleine Proteus'. In 1900, the biologist H. V. Wilson discovered and isolated a giant amoeba that resembled Amoeba proteus but had cellular nuclei numbering in the hundreds. Since there existed already a genus of giant multinucleate amoebae, Pelomyxa, Wilson placed his organism in that taxon, naming it Pelomyxa carolinensis. In 1926, Asa A. Schaeffer argued that Pelomyxa carolinensis was identical to the amoeba seen by Rösel in 1755, urging that the name should be Chaos chaos. By the early 1970s, all three names were in use concurrently, but studies of fine structure and physiology made it clear there were profound differences between it and other Pelomyxa, including the complete absence of mitochondria in true Pelomyxa. Today the organism is generally known as Chaos carolinensis.
